To boost tourism in the Northwest Istria region of Croatia, Istraturist was searching for a more effective online promotion. A redesign of two existing booking websites and the launch of a new centralized tourist information website were to be designed.
A 42% increase of hotel room bookings and a 35% increase in camping bookings. A user-friendly online overview of the beauty that Northwest Istria has to offer.

Istraturist is a Croatian company with 50 years of experience in offering tourist services in hotels, apartment resorts and campsites in Northwest Istria, Croatia. They operate two booking websites where customers can find and book accommodation in the area.
In 2010 Istraturist joined forces with other local tourism offices and hotels in Northwest Istria to improve the online presence of the region, and increase traffic towards the booking websites. Istraturist asked us to design a new tourist information website, ‘Colours of Istria’, and to redesigns their existing booking websites. Together with Istraturist we defined the following challenges:

The ‘Colours of Istria’ website has become the central focal point for tourism in the region, providing an abundance of high-quality content on activities, destinations, culture and accommodations. The website makes it easier for potential tourists to explore Northwest Istria’s offer, and better persuades them to choose Northwest Istria as their next holiday destination.

What works better than knowing what content potential tourists are looking for? In a thorough keyword analysis we learned what tourists search for when looking for a holiday destination. The most relevant keywords were incorporated in the new design of the ‘Colours of Istria’ website.

We focused on optimizing the booking flow. We combined hotel and destination information, to provide context in the booking process. Information pages were given a cleaner layout to only highlight what’s relevant to the user.

We developed one seamless customer journey throughout the three websites, letting them function as one harmonious ensemble. The ‘Colours of Istria’ website is optimized for search engines (SEO), and attracts large numbers of visitors. The visitors are being funneled efficiently to the booking websites, where further engagement results in a conversion rates boost. Great teamwork!

When we started designing we asked ourselves: ‘why would you book a room in a hotel or resort in Northwest Istria? Or go camping in the region?’ Well, because it is breathtakingly beautiful out there, there’s good food and there are perfect options to relax or get active. Moodboarding helped us to capture these qualities and create designs for websites that can convey these unique selling points of Northwest Istria to all vacation lovers.
We delivered three new websites before the 2011 tourist season. The improved online experience helped Istraturist achieve the following results:
