Expert Review

What is an Expert Review?

An Expert Review is a simple and quick method of evaluating a user interface, also known as heuristic evaluation. Strictly speaking it is not a user research method, because it does not involve any actual users. Instead, an Expert Review involves two or three usability experts that systematically inspect a user interface.

How does an Expert Review work?

The usability experts use the interface in a similar way as the target audience would. This allows them to identify violations of general usability guidelines (see Jakob Nielsen and best practices. At User Intelligence we often supplement the qualitative data of the Expert Review with quantitative data from Web Analytics. This makes it possible to back up the ‘opinions’ of the experts with real-world statistics, without adding too much additional budget or time. An example of the combination of methods is given in the following case study.

Why an Expert Review?

An Expert Review can never be a substitute for a Usability Test, but it can be a good alternative for evaluating a user interface. More information can be found in this news article.

What are the deliverables?

Our Expert Review reports include:

  • Description of the issues found
  • Estimation of the severity of the issues
  • Possible solutions to the issues

The report is usually presented during a workshop with the client.
