iPad study launched by UI
Last Friday the iPad was finally available in the Netherlands. To get insight in the experiences of the first iPad-owners, User Intelligence launched a diary study (example of diary study)!
What is the goal of the diary study?
The goal of the diary study is to get insight into the usage and the experiences with the new iPad. As with all new products that promise to be “revolutionary”, there are many questions on how the iPad will actually be used. For example: What tasks are carried out on the iPad? And will the usage change over time? We hope to answer these questions in our study.
Who are the participants?
Our study is intended to show how the iPad is used. Obviously it is great to find out how it is used now. However, it would even be better to understand how the iPad will be used by the ‘average user’ in the coming years.
The best approach would be to run a diary study in the coming years, but that does not give us any insights now. Our approach was to recruit ‘early adopters’, as they often show behavior that will become mainstream later. So how could we recruit these people?
The answer was quite simple: as the iPad will be introduced in the Netherlands, many of these early adopters are desperately trying to get an iPad as quickly as possible. The Mac House in Amsterdam was no different, as there was an impressive line of customers before the shop even opened!

While waiting in the queue (we were buying one as well), we thought it would be a good moment to invite the people for participation in our diary study. This gave us almost 20 participants in less than an hour. In addition, we were interviewed by RTL News, but that’s a different story.
When are the results available?
As the participants are all still very busy writing down their experiences, the results are not there yet. However, they will be published in our next newsletter! Keep an eye on our website for more information or contact us for more information!
